The Core Fabrics, Explained
Most everyday clothing is made from a handful of recurring materials. Here's what each one does well — and where it falls short.
Cotton
A natural fiber that is breathable, soft, and easy to launder. Cotton absorbs moisture well, making it comfortable in warm weather, but it wrinkles readily and can shrink in hot water. It's one of the most versatile and widely available fabrics in everyday clothing.
Polyester
A synthetic fiber known for its durability, wrinkle resistance, and moisture-wicking properties. Polyester dries quickly and holds its shape well, but it traps heat and can feel less breathable than natural fibers. It's commonly blended with cotton or other materials to offset this.
Linen
A plant-based fabric made from flax fibers. Linen is exceptionally breathable and becomes softer with each wash, making it a go-to for warm climates. Its main drawback is that it wrinkles very easily and can feel stiff until broken in.
Wool
A natural animal fiber prized for its warmth and moisture management. Wool can absorb a significant amount of moisture without feeling wet, and it regulates temperature in both cold and mild conditions. It typically requires more careful laundering to avoid shrinkage or distortion.
Rayon (Viscose)
A semi-synthetic fabric made from plant cellulose. Rayon drapes beautifully and has a soft, silky feel at an accessible price point, but it wrinkles easily, is prone to shrinkage, and often requires hand washing or dry cleaning.
Nylon
A synthetic fiber that is lightweight, strong, and highly resistant to abrasion. Nylon is often used in activewear, outerwear linings, and hosiery. It dries quickly but, like polyester, can feel warm and less breathable in hot conditions.
Spandex (Elastane)
A stretchy synthetic fiber almost never used alone, but blended in small percentages to add flexibility and shape recovery to other fabrics. Even 2–5% spandex content can significantly improve how a garment moves and retains its fit over time.
Silk
A natural protein fiber produced by silkworms, known for its smooth texture, subtle sheen, and lightweight drape. Silk is temperature-regulating but delicate — it's sensitive to water stains, sunlight, and rough handling, and often requires professional or hand care.

Blends: When Two Fabrics Are Better Than One
Most off-the-rack clothing isn't a single pure fiber — it's a blend. A cotton-polyester shirt, for example, resists wrinkling better than 100% cotton while staying more breathable than all-polyester. A wool-nylon blend in dress trousers adds durability without sacrificing the warmth and drape wool provides.
Blends are engineered to offset each component's weaknesses. The tradeoff is that blends can be harder to care for — what works for one fiber may damage the other. Checking the care label before washing is especially important with mixed-fiber items.
A Quick Note on Fabric Content Percentages
When a label reads "60% cotton, 40% polyester," the fabric was engineered with specific performance goals in mind — not arbitrary mixing. Higher percentages of a given fiber generally mean that fiber's characteristics dominate. A garment that's 95% wool, for example, will behave almost entirely like wool, while one that's 55% linen and 45% cotton will be softer and slightly less prone to wrinkling than pure linen. Reading these ratios gives you a useful prediction of how a piece will feel and perform.
