What Are Retinoids?
Retinoids are a broad family of compounds derived from vitamin A. - Tretinoin (retinoic acid): A prescription-only retinoid in the U.S. that is already in its active form — no conversion needed. The most studied and fastest-acting, but also the most likely to cause irritation.
- Adapalene: A synthetic retinoid available over the counter at 0.1% concentration. Originally developed for acne, it tends to be less irritating than tretinoin for some users.

- Apply to dry skin: Wait 20 to 30 minutes after cleansing before applying. Applying to damp skin increases absorption and, with it, the chance of irritation.
- Moisturize generously: Follow with a fragrance-free moisturizer to support your skin barrier. Some people prefer the "sandwich" method — moisturizer, then retinoid, then another thin layer of moisturizer.
- Wear SPF every morning: Retinoids increase photosensitivity. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is essential, every single day.
- Increase frequency gradually: After four to six weeks with no significant irritation, you can consider increasing to every other night, and eventually nightly if your skin tolerates it well.
