Why Endurance Coaches Prioritize Zone 2
Coaches who work with distance runners, cyclists, and triathletes have long structured training around a principle sometimes called polarized training — spending a large proportion of weekly volume at low intensity and a smaller proportion at very high intensity, with relatively little in the middle ranges. Zone 2 is the backbone of that low-intensity volume.
The physiological reasoning is grounded in how the body adapts. Sustained Zone 2 training is associated with improvements in mitochondrial density — essentially, the number and efficiency of the cellular engines that convert oxygen and fuel into usable energy. It also supports improvements in cardiac output and the body's ability to clear lactate before it accumulates. How Zone 2 Fits Into a Balanced Fitness Routine
Zone 2 training is not a replacement for higher-intensity cardio or strength work — it's a complement to them. Most fitness guidelines recommend a mix of intensity levels across the week. Zone 2 sessions can serve as active recovery on days between harder efforts, or as standalone workouts in their own right. Suitable activities include:

Use the Talk Test as Your Guide
If you don't have a heart rate monitor, the conversation test is a reliable proxy for Zone 2. During your session, try speaking a full sentence out loud. If you can do so without pausing for breath, you're likely in Zone 2. If you're gasping mid-sentence, ease off. If you could sing comfortably, pick up the pace slightly.
